Good Examples of the 'Hard Boiled Detective' Genre?

What are a few good examples of the 'Hard Boiled' Detective Genre? Something similar to detective-style film noir but in books rather than on film? I've had Chandler and Hammett recommend as authors, which of their works would be best to start with? Are there any contemporary (or at least more recent) authors who've also covered the genre so I can see how it's evolved since Chandler and Hammett? Any advice would be gratefully received (and rewarded with points obviously)...
